Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum systemic herbicide widely used in plant biology and agricultural research. It functions as a potent inhibitor of 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), a key enzyme in the shikimate pathway responsible for the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids. Glyphosate is extensively used as a selection agent in plant transformation systems, particularly in conjunction with glyphosate-resistant genes such as modified EPSPS. Mechanism of Action: Glyphosate inhibits EPSPS, blocking the shikimate pathway and preventing the synthesis of essential aromatic amino acids including phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan. This leads to disruption of protein synthesis and plant growth, ultimately resulting in cell death.
