Kanamycin sulphate monohydrate is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic originally isolated from Streptomyces kanamyceticus. It is widely used in molecular biology, microbiology, and cell culture applications for bacterial selection and contamination control. Kanamycin is commonly employed as a selective agent in cloning systems utilizing the neomycin/kanamycin resistance gene (neo/kan), and is preferred for its higher stability compared to β-lactam antibiotics such as ampicillin. Mechanism of Action: Kanamycin binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of mRNA and inhibition of protein synthesis. This results in the production of nonfunctional proteins and ultimately leads to bacterial cell death.
