Phleomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic belonging to the bleomycin family, widely used as a selective agent in molecular biology and cell biology research. It exhibits potent activity against bacteria and eukaryotic cells by inducing DNA damage. Phleomycin is commonly used for the selection of genetically engineered cells expressing the Sh ble resistance gene, making it a key reagent in yeast, fungal, and mammalian expression systems. Mechanism of Action: Phleomycin binds to DNA and, in the presence of oxygen and metal ions, induces single- and double-strand breaks. This leads to inhibition of DNA replication and transcription, ultimately resulting in cell death.
