Sulphamethoxazole is a sulfonamide antibiotic widely used in microbiology and molecular biology research. It exhibits broad-spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by inhibiting folate biosynthesis. Sulphamethoxazole is commonly used alone or in combination with trimethoprim (TMP-SMX) to achieve synergistic inhibition of bacterial growth. Mechanism of Action: Sulphamethoxazole is a structural analog of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and competitively inhibits dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), a key enzyme in folate synthesis. This blocks the production of dihydrofolic acid, leading to impaired DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis.
