DL-Phosphinothricin (PPT), also known as glufosinate, is a broad-spectrum herbicidal compound widely used in plant biology and genetic engineering. It functions as a potent inhibitor of glutamine synthetase (GS), a key enzyme in nitrogen metabolism. PPT is extensively used as a selection agent in plant transformation systems, particularly in combination with the bar or pat resistance genes, making it a core reagent in transgenic plant development. Mechanism of Action: PPT inhibits glutamine synthetase, leading to accumulation of ammonia and disruption of nitrogen metabolism. This results in inhibition of photosynthesis and cellular metabolism, ultimately causing plant cell death.
