Doxorubicin hydrochloride is an anthracycline antibiotic with potent antitumor activity, originally isolated from Streptomyces peucetius. It is widely used in molecular and cell biology as a DNA-interacting agent to study cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, and cancer biology. Doxorubicin is also commonly used in drug screening and cytotoxicity assays due to its well-characterized mechanism of action. Mechanism of Action: Doxorubicin intercalates into DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II, preventing DNA replication and transcription. It also generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), contributing to oxidative damage and apoptosis.
