Carbenicillin disodium is a semi-synthetic β-lactam antibiotic belonging to the carboxypenicillin class. It exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, particularly against Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Carbenicillin is widely used in molecular biology as an alternative to ampicillin for plasmid selection due to its improved stability and reduced satellite colony formation.
Mechanism of Action:
Carbenicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby blocking peptidoglycan cross-linking. This leads to weakening of the cell wall and eventual bacterial cell lysis.
Resistance is commonly mediated by β-lactamase enzymes, as well as modifications in PBPs or reduced permeability of the bacterial outer membrane. Compared to ampicillin, carbenicillin is more resistant to degradation, resulting in more stable selection conditions.
