Bromoxynil is a nitrile herbicide widely used in plant biology and agricultural research as a photosystem II (PSII) inhibitor. It is commonly applied to study photosynthetic electron transport, herbicide action mechanisms, and plant physiology. In laboratory settings, bromoxynil is also used as a selection agent in plant systems engineered for herbicide resistance. Mechanism of Action: Bromoxynil inhibits photosynthesis by binding to the QB-binding site of the D1 protein in photosystem II, blocking electron transport. This disruption leads to the accumulation of reactive oxygen species and causes oxidative damage to cellular components, ultimately resulting in plant cell death. Resistance to bromoxynil is typically conferred by modifications in the psbA gene encoding the D1 protein, reducing herbicide binding affinity.
