Bialaphos sodium is a naturally occurring tripeptide herbicide produced by Streptomyces hygroscopicus. It is widely used in plant biology as a selection agent in transformation systems due to its potent inhibition of glutamine synthetase. Bialaphos is structurally related to phosphinothricin and is metabolized in plant cells to release the active compound, making it effective for selecting transgenic plants carrying resistance genes such as bar or pat. Mechanism of Action: Bialaphos is taken up by plant cells and hydrolyzed to release phosphinothricin, which inhibits glutamine synthetase. This inhibition leads to accumulation of ammonia and disruption of amino acid metabolism, ultimately causing plant cell death. Resistance is conferred by genes such as bar or pat, which encode phosphinothricin acetyltransferase, an enzyme that detoxifies phosphinothricin and allows survival of transformed cells.
