Ticarcillin disodium / clavulanate potassium is a combination of a broad-spectrum β-lactam antibiotic and a β-lactamase inhibitor. Ticarcillin, a carboxypenicillin, exhibits strong activity against Gram-negative bacteria, while clavulanate inhibits β-lactamase enzymes that would otherwise inactivate β-lactam antibiotics. This combination is widely used in microbiology and plant research to control bacterial contamination and to overcome antibiotic resistance. Mechanism of Action: Ticarcillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby blocking peptidoglycan cross-linking and leading to cell lysis. Clavulanate irreversibly inhibits β-lactamase enzymes, protecting ticarcillin from degradation and restoring its antibacterial activity.
