Streptomycin sulphate is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic originally isolated from Streptomyces griseus. It is widely used in microbiology and cell culture applications for its activity against Gram-negative bacteria and certain Gram-positive organisms. Streptomycin is commonly used in combination with penicillin (Pen-Strep) as a standard supplement to prevent bacterial contamination in cell culture systems. Mechanism of Action: Streptomycin binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of mRNA and inhibition of protein synthesis. This leads to the production of nonfunctional proteins and ultimately results in bacterial cell death.
