Rifampicin is a broad-spectrum ansamycin antibiotic derived from Streptomyces mediterranei. It is widely used in microbiology and molecular biology research for its potent activity against Gram-positive bacteria and certain Gram-negative organisms. Rifampicin is commonly applied as a selective agent and as a tool for studying transcription and RNA synthesis in bacterial systems. Mechanism of Action: Rifampicin binds to the β-subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, thereby inhibiting the initiation of RNA synthesis. This prevents transcription and ultimately leads to bacterial cell death.
