5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is a fluorinated pyrimidine analog widely used as an antimetabolite in molecular biology and cell biology research. It interferes with nucleic acid metabolism and is commonly used to study DNA and RNA synthesis, cell cycle regulation, and apoptosis. 5-FU is also used as a selective agent in genetic systems such as yeast, particularly in combination with URA3-based selection.
