Polymyxin B sulphate is a cationic cyclic polypeptide antibiotic produced by Bacillus polymyxa. It exhibits potent activity against Gram-negative bacteria and is widely used in microbiology and cell biology research. Polymyxin B is also commonly used as a tool for studying membrane integrity and for neutralizing lipopolysaccharides (LPS, endotoxins) in experimental systems. Mechanism of Action: Polymyxin B interacts with lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and phospholipids in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. This disrupts membrane integrity, increases permeability, and leads to leakage of cellular contents and cell death. In addition, polymyxin B can bind and neutralize endotoxins, making it useful in studies involving inflammatory responses.
