Penicillin G sodium is a β-lactam antibiotic widely used for its activity against Gram-positive bacteria. It is one of the most commonly used antibiotics in microbiology and cell culture applications. Penicillin G is frequently used in combination with streptomycin (Pen-Strep) as a standard supplement to prevent bacterial contamination in cell culture systems. Mechanism of Action: Penicillin G inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby blocking the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains. This leads to weakening of the cell wall and eventual bacterial lysis.
