Paromomycin sulphate is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces rimosus var. paromomycinus. It exhibits activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as certain protozoa. Paromomycin is widely used in microbiology and cell biology research, particularly as a tool for studying protein synthesis and as a selective agent in specific genetic systems, including protozoan models. Mechanism of Action: Paromomycin binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of mRNA and inhibition of protein synthesis. This leads to the production of abnormal proteins and ultimately results in cell death.
