Nystatin is a polyene antifungal antibiotic produced by Streptomyces noursei. It exhibits strong activity against a wide range of yeasts and filamentous fungi and is widely used in microbiology and cell culture applications. Nystatin is commonly applied to control fungal contamination and as a research tool to study membrane integrity and sterol interactions in eukaryotic cells. Mechanism of Action: Nystatin binds to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, forming pores that disrupt membrane integrity. This results in leakage of intracellular ions and molecules, ultimately leading to cell death.
