Neomycin sulphate is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic originally isolated from Streptomyces fradiae. It is active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and is widely used in microbiology and molecular biology research. Neomycin is closely related to kanamycin and serves as the basis for neomycin resistance (neo) selection systems, making it an important tool in cloning and genetic studies. Mechanism of Action: Neomycin binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of mRNA and inhibition of protein synthesis. This results in the production of nonfunctional proteins and ultimately leads to bacterial cell death.
