Nalidixic acid is a synthetic quinolone antibiotic and the first member of the quinolone class. It exhibits activity primarily against Gram-negative bacteria and is widely used in microbiology and molecular biology research. Nalidixic acid is commonly applied as a selective agent in culture media and as a tool to study DNA replication, mutation, and bacterial resistance mechanisms. Mechanism of Action: Nalidixic acid inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II), an essential enzyme involved in DNA replication and supercoiling. This inhibition prevents proper DNA replication and transcription, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death.
