Miconazole nitrate is an imidazole antifungal agent widely used for its broad-spectrum activity against fungi and certain Gram-positive bacteria. It is commonly applied in microbiology and cell culture to control fungal contamination and to study membrane-related processes. Miconazole is also used as a research tool for investigating sterol biosynthesis and membrane integrity in eukaryotic cells. Mechanism of Action: Miconazole inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol by blocking lanosterol 14α-demethylase, an essential enzyme in fungal sterol metabolism. This leads to disruption of membrane structure and function, resulting in increased permeability and cell death.
