Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic widely used for its potent activity against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. It is commonly applied in microbiology and cell biology research to study anaerobic metabolism, microbial interactions, and DNA damage mechanisms. Metronidazole is also used as a selective agent in anaerobic culture systems and in experimental models involving hypoxic conditions. Mechanism of Action: Metronidazole is a prodrug that is activated under anaerobic conditions by microbial nitroreductases.
