Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic originally isolated from Streptomyces erythreus (now Saccharopolyspora erythraea). It exhibits strong activity against Gram-positive bacteria and certain Gram-negative organisms. Erythromycin is widely used in microbiology, molecular biology, and cell biology as a selective agent and as a tool for studying protein synthesis and mitochondrial function. Mechanism of Action: Erythromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting translocation during protein synthesis and preventing elongation of the peptide chain. This results in suppression of bacterial growth. In eukaryotic systems, erythromycin can also affect mitochondrial ribosomes due to their similarity to bacterial ribosomes, making it a useful tool for studying mitochondrial protein synthesis.
