D-Cycloserine is a broad-spectrum antibiotic structurally analogous to D-alanine and widely used in microbiology and research applications. It is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, with particular relevance in studies involving mycobacteria and cell wall biosynthesis. D-Cycloserine is also used as a selective agent in specialized microbiological media and as a research tool for investigating peptidoglycan synthesis pathways. Mechanism of Action: D-Cycloserine inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by targeting two key enzymes: alanine racemase and D-alanine:D-alanine ligase. These enzymes are essential for the formation of D-alanine dipeptides required for peptidoglycan synthesis. Inhibition leads to defective cell wall assembly and bacterial cell death.
