Chlorhexidine hydrochloride (Chlorhexidine HCl) is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent belonging to the bisbiguanide class. It is widely used as a disinfectant and antiseptic due to its strong activity against bacteria, fungi, and certain enveloped viruses. In laboratory settings, chlorhexidine is used for contamination control, surface sterilization, and as an antimicrobial additive in selected experimental systems. Mechanism of Action: Chlorhexidine disrupts microbial cell membranes by binding to negatively charged phospholipids, leading to increased membrane permeability and leakage of intracellular components. At higher concentrations, it causes precipitation of cytoplasmic contents and irreversible cell damage.
