Cephalexin monohydrate is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic belonging to the β-lactam class. It exhibits strong activity against Gram-positive bacteria and moderate activity against certain Gram-negative organisms. Cephalexin is widely used in microbiology and research applications to control bacterial contamination and as a selective agent in culture systems.
Mechanism of Action:
Cephalexin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby blocking the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains. This results in weakening of the bacterial cell wall and ultimately leads to cell lysis and death.
Resistance to cephalexin may occur through β-lactamase production, alterations in PBPs, or decreased permeability of the bacterial outer membrane.
