Cefotaxime sodium is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic belonging to the β-lactam class. It exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity with enhanced efficacy against Gram-negative bacteria. Cefotaxime is widely used in plant biology and microbiology as a selective agent, particularly for eliminating Agrobacterium tumefaciens following plant transformation while maintaining plant tissue viability. Mechanism of Action: Cefotaxime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby preventing peptidoglycan cross-linking. This leads to weakening of the bacterial cell wall and eventual cell lysis. Resistance may occur through β-lactamase production, alterations in PBPs, or reduced membrane permeability. Cefotaxime is generally more resistant to β-lactamase degradation compared to earlier-generation cephalosporins.
