Bacitracin is a cyclic polypeptide antibiotic produced by Bacillus licheniformis and Bacillus subtilis. It is primarily active against Gram-positive bacteria and is widely used in microbiology for selective inhibition of bacterial growth. Bacitracin is commonly applied in laboratory research and diagnostic media as a selective agent to suppress susceptible organisms. Mechanism of Action: Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by interfering with the dephosphorylation of bactoprenol, a lipid carrier molecule involved in peptidoglycan transport. This disruption prevents the transfer of cell wall precursors across the cytoplasmic membrane, leading to inhibition of cell wall assembly and bacterial cell death. Resistance to bacitracin may occur through efflux systems, sequestration mechanisms, or alterations in cell envelope pathways.
