Ampicillin sodium is a β-lactam, broad-spectrum aminopenicillin antibiotic structurally related to penicillin. It is a semi-synthetic derivative designed to enhance activity against Gram-negative bacteria while maintaining efficacy against Gram-positive organisms. Ampicillin is widely used in microbiology and molecular biology applications as a selective agent to control bacterial growth and contamination. Mechanism of Action: Ampicillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), thereby blocking the cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains. This leads to weakening of the bacterial cell wall and ultimately cell lysis and death. Resistance to ampicillin is commonly mediated by β-lactamase enzymes that hydrolyze the β-lactam ring. Additional resistance mechanisms include alterations in PBPs and reduced permeability of the bacterial outer membrane. Ampicillin resistance is widely utilized as a selectable marker in molecular cloning systems.
