Amoxycillin sodium / clavulanate potassium is a combination of a broad-spectrum β-lactam aminopenicillin antibiotic and a β-lactamase inhibitor. Amoxycillin provides antibacterial activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, while clavulanate potassium inhibits β-lactamase enzymes that would otherwise degrade β-lactam antibiotics. This synergistic combination extends the antibacterial spectrum and restores activity against β-lactamase-producing organisms. It is widely used in microbiology and cell culture systems for enhanced contamination control. Mechanism of Action: Amoxycillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), blocking peptidoglycan cross-linking and leading to cell lysis. Clavulanate acts as a suicide inhibitor of β-lactamases, irreversibly binding to these enzymes and preventing the degradation of amoxycillin. Resistance may still occur through mechanisms such as altered PBPs, efflux pumps, or production of β-lactamases not inhibited by clavulanate.
