McCown Woody Plant Medium (WPM) was originally developed by Lloyd and McCown in 1981 for the in vitro culture of shoot tips of mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia). The formulation consists of a defined blend of inorganic salts designed to meet the nutritional requirements of woody plant species. Compared to general-purpose media, WPM provides a balanced mineral composition suitable for the typically lower nutrient demands of woody tissues. Calcium nitrate serves as a primary nitrogen source, while potassium dihydrogen phosphate provides phosphate for growth. Essential microelements support plant metabolism and tissue development. WPM has become a standard medium for the micropropagation of a wide range of woody plants.
