Westvaco WV5 Medium, including vitamins, was developed by Coke in 1996 for the in vitro initiation of embryogenic cultures from immature seeds of Pinus taeda (loblolly pine, family Pinaceae). The medium is also suitable for subsequent embryo development and shoot culture of loblolly pine. It consists of a defined nutrient blend of inorganic salts and vitamins formulated to support embryogenic competence and active cell proliferation. Nitrogen is supplied as a combination of potassium nitrate and ammonium nitrate, promoting sustained cell division. Essential macroelements, microelements, thiamine, and inositol support metabolic activity, embryo development, and shoot quality under in vitro conditions.
